How to set up your mic so people can actually hear you
If your friends keep going "wait, what?", it's almost never the mic itself — it's a couple of settings nobody ever gets around to. Let's walk through them, no fluff.
First, the right device
Windows loves to pick the wrong one. Open your sound settings and check which mic is set as the default input. The classic mistake: a webcam mic is on instead of your headset — you get sound, but it's hollow and far away. Switch to your headset, and make sure the same one is selected inside Wexo under voice settings.
Level: loud, but not clipping
Too quiet and you're inaudible; too loud and it crackles and clips. Say a few sentences at a normal volume and watch the meter: it should comfortably reach halfway to two-thirds, without slamming into the top. If you have to shout, raise the mic gain; if it distorts, back it off.
Quick tip: position the mic to the side of your mouth, not right in front of it. Fewer popping consonants, and less chance of clipping on loud words.
Noise suppression and echo
A fan, a mechanical keyboard, the cat — all of it reaches the other people. Wexo has noise suppression on out of the box, but if the background is really rough, two things help:
- Headphones, not speakers. Speakers mean echo: your mic picks up what everyone else says and feeds it right back to them.
- Push-to-talk for a noisy setup. Bind push-to-talk to a comfortable key — the mic only opens while you're actually talking.
Still silent?
Nine out of ten "my mic isn't working" cases come down to one of three things: the wrong input device, the app's microphone permission in your OS, or a physical mute on the headset itself (that one button everyone forgets). Run through those three and the sound almost always comes back.
Set it up once, and after that you just hop into a voice channel, come through clearly, and nobody has to ask you to repeat anything.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't people hear me in Wexo?
Usually the wrong microphone is set as the default input device, or the gain is too low. Check your default mic in the system sound settings and make sure the same headset is selected in Wexo's voice settings.
How do I get rid of echo in voice chat?
Use headphones instead of speakers, so your mic doesn't pick up what other people say and feed it back to them. Noise suppression is on by default in Wexo, and push-to-talk helps on a noisy setup.
What if my microphone doesn't work at all?
Check three things: whether the correct input device is selected, whether the app has microphone permission in your OS, and whether a physical mute switch on the headset is on.
